Born on the 17th of April 1947 in Birkenhead (Cheshire), England, Stewart was the eldest of four brothers - all engineers and sons of Doris and Kennedy Gibson of Grappenhall, Cheshire.

An adventurer at heart, Stewart spent three years in Papua New Guinea as part of his “Voluntary Service Overseas” (the equivalent of present-day Peace Corps). Via employ with Rolls Royce Engines following graduation from university, Stewart’s project in New Guinea was to assist local families in establishing the farming infrastructure and distribution of their crops.

Utilizing his Master’s Ticket earned prior, Stewart captained a vessel that transported copra and other crops grown locally on the remote island of Bougainville to ports of call along the Pacific with final destination in Port Moresby, on the mainland of P. New Guinea. At the completion of his Voluntary Service, Stewart made his way home to England via Australia, New Zealand, and South America.

Upon return to Great Britain, he married his wife of 45 years - Helen Rapley Gibson - and the two settled firstly in Toronto, Canada before making their way to Barrington, RI in 1981.

Stewart became known as an authority in the spray drying subfield of mechanical engineering, with a career that spanned more than 30 years working collaboratively with fellows in his field across North and South America, and Europe.

A creative and encouraging father to his daughter, Fiona, he was also a lifelong church chorister, enthusiastic gardener, avid traveler and lover of the great outdoors.

Stewart leaves behind a loving family and many dear friends. He is remembered by his wife, Helen, of Barrington, RI and their daughter & son-in-law Fiona Gibson Balan and Sabish Balan of Dobbs Ferry, New York… Together with their families, Stewart is survived by his three younger brothers David Gibson (and Anne) of Somerset, England, Andrew Gibson (and Vigdis Viken) of Trondheim, Norway and Nigel Gibson (and Judith) of Banchory, Scotland.
