Obituary For George N. Hanos

George Nicholas Hanos, 81, of Newport, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully at his home on September 9th, surrounded by his loving family.

A lifelong Newport resident, George was a proud graduate of Rogers High School. He continued his education at UMass Dartmouth, where he excelled academically and graduated at the top of his class with a degree in Business Administration. After graduation George went on to have successful careers at the Newport Shipyard as well as Raytheon in their submarine signal division. He also had a successful business of his own called Newport City Metals.

George was a man who found joy in life’s simplest pleasures. He had a special fondness for good food—especially hamburgers and lobster rolls—but above all, he loved sharing meals and laughter with family and friends. His happiest moments were when the house was full and the table even fuller. He was very proud of his Greek heritage and had a special affinity for Greek food especially his mother’s Greek cooking. George grew up on the waters of Newport lobstering with his father and brother. He spoke often about time spent with them on their lobster boat the Olympia.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Iverna (Smith); his daughters Cheryl (husband Jason) of Statesville, North Carolina, and Christina (husband Mark) of Newport, Rhode Island; his brother John Hanos and his wife Linda, his sister Mary Deluca and her husband John; and his cherished grandchildren Brandon, Isabella, Jaron, Arianna, Cadence, Tobias, Evangelina, and Adeleigh. He is also survived by Fern who he thought of as a granddaughter and Penelope who he thought of as a great granddaughter as well as many nieces and nephews whom he loved.

George was predeceased by his parents, Nicholas and Helen (Georgoulousi), and his brother William and his wife Dianne.

Arrangements are with Family’s Choice Cremation, 8 Schoolhouse Rd. Warren, RI 02885. A service celebrating George’s life will be held on Saturday, September 20th, at 1:00 p.m. at OceanPointe Christian Church 66 Valley Road in Middletown, Rhode Island 02842.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to Visiting Nurse Home & Hospice a non profit located in Middletown RI who provided such loving care for him in his final days.
