Obituary For John J. Moniz
John J. Moniz 77 of Riverside, Rhode Island passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 25, 2026. Born to the late John and Linda Moniz, he was the devoted and beloved husband of Elaine Moniz.
A longtime resident of East Providence, John built both homes and lasting relationships throughout his life. He worked proudly as a carpenter until his retirement and was among some early contractors to introduce drywall construction techniques from Canada to the area — a testament to his forward-thinking craftsmanship and dedication to his trade that will stand as part of his legacy for years to come.
John was also a passionate motorcycle enthusiast whose custom bikes earned recognition in major magazines during the 1980’s, and was well respected in the motorcycle community.
Music was another great love of John’s life. In his younger years, he was a talented singer and bass player who performed in local bands and shared his voice at charity events. In later years, he continued giving back by cooking for charitable gatherings, always finding ways to bring people together. Whether through music, food, or friendship, John had a gift for spreading joy and making others feel welcome.
Above all, John cherished his family. In addition to his beloved wife Elaine, he is survived by his son, Derek Moniz of Riverside; his sister, Dori Moniz of East Providence; and his stepson, Ron Gomes Jr. of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He leaves behind many friends and loved ones who will remember his humor, generosity, and unmistakable presence.
A Celebration of Life event will be held in his honor on Saturday, March 14th, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at The Riviera Restaurant 580 N. Broadway in East Providence, RI. All friends and family are welcomed to attend.
Arrangements are entrusted to Family’s Choice Cremation, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, RI 02885.
